Project Eco is an ecologically focused six-week extended school year and
recreation program for special education students, ages 9-21.
Professional educators, naturalists and therapists work with students
individually and in small groups according to each child’s Individual
Education Plan and therapeutic goals. A relaxed, natural setting
encourages positive social interaction, promotes wholesome recreation
and offers exceptional opportunities for hands-on learning.
Education
The educational program is adapted to each student’s Individual
Education Plan and taught by Certified Teachers of the Handicapped.
Kateri teachers connect learning about the environment to academic study
in fun and creative ways including frequent field trips and guest
speakers. The staff to student ratio is limited to 1:5.
Counseling
Individual and group counseling is a vital part of Project Eco. A social
worker helps students to develop social and other life skills.
Recreation
Following their daily lessons, students take part in traditional camp
activities that build confidence and encourage cooperation with others.
The students have daily swim lessons, and water therapy and afternoon
free swim time. We offer activities including sports, arts & crafts, and
outdoor adventures such as frog catching, fossil hunting, and hiking.
Project Eco is offered at Kateri Environmental Center at Collier
Services. The 2010 program runs from Monday, July 12 through Friday, August
20. Hours are Monday – Friday,
8:30 AM – 3:00 PM. Breakfast, lunch and an afternoon snack are provided.
The cost of the program is $3400.00. Project Eco is open to special
education students ages 9–21.
